Crash via incorrect persistent-buffer sub-buffer indexing
Published Oct 28, 2026 · Updated Oct 28, 2026
An indexing error in Linux's tracing ring buffer allows local users to trigger a kernel crash by mapping trace_pipe_raw. rb_meta_subbuf_idx() omits the metadata header when calculating the sub-buffer base, shifting indices and leaving a NULL entry that __rb_map_vma() dereferences. Triggering requires access to tracefs and a persistent buffer with an affected alignment; incorrect saved indices also cause the previous boot's trace to be discarded.
