Kernel warning via racing trace-buffer reader advancement
Published Oct 28, 2026 · Updated Oct 28, 2026
A race in Linux 6.10 trace-buffer mapping allows local users to trigger a kernel warning through the reader-advance ioctl. In kernel/trace/ring_buffer.c, ring_buffer_map_get_reader() incorrectly warns when rb_get_reader_page() returns NULL because a writer has advanced its commit page but has not published committed data. Triggering requires access to the tracefs mapping interface and concurrent event commits; the warning causes a kernel panic when panic_on_warn is enabled.
