Invalid timestamps via histogram registration race
Published Oct 28, 2026 · Updated Oct 28, 2026
A race in Linux tracing allows local users to trigger kernel warnings and record invalid timestamps via histogram registration. The hist_field_timestamp() function passes a temporary buffered event to ring_buffer_event_time_stamp(), which expects an active ring-buffer reservation. Triggering requires write access to tracefs event controls and histogram registration racing with a filtered event; the documented consequence is a warning and incorrect trace data.
