Kernel panic via misaligned shared packet fragments
Published Oct 28, 2026 · Updated Oct 28, 2026
Alignment failure in Linux page_pool allows attackers to crash the kernel via UDP traffic on configured x86 systems. page_pool_alloc_frag_netmem() advances the shared fragment offset by odd packet lengths without ensuring skb_shared_info alignment, making later skb_clone() atomic accesses cross cache-line boundaries. The demonstrated trigger requires generic XDP on loopback, a raw UDP socket that causes packet cloning, and fatal kernel split-lock detection.
