Kernel-memory corruption via unchecked extended-attribute copy
Published Oct 28, 2026 · Updated Oct 28, 2026
Heap corruption in the Linux SMB1 client allows local users to overwrite kernel memory via oversized extended-attribute writes. CIFSSMBSetEA() copies the attribute value without reserving buffer space for request headers and the attribute name, and SendReceive() checks the length only after the copy. Unprivileged setxattr calls on an SMB1 mount reach the overflow; the published demonstration establishes an out-of-bounds kernel write, not code execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
