Data loss via misaligned discard ranges
Published Oct 28, 2026 · Updated Oct 28, 2026
Incorrect discard alignment in Linux NTFS allows local users to delete allocated data through FITRIM on affected filesystems. In fs/ntfs/bitmap.c, ntfs_trim_fs() rounds the free extent's start upward but rounds its original length downward, extending discard requests into allocated clusters. Direct invocation requires CAP_SYS_ADMIN, a mounted NTFS filesystem, a discard-capable device, and a misaligned free extent; testing demonstrated allocated clusters returning zeros even after remount.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
