Kernel crash via misaligned huge-page mappings
Published Oct 18, 2026 · Updated Oct 18, 2026
Alignment errors in Linux 6.13 x86 memory mapping allow local users to trigger a kernel crash via huge-page mappings. get_align_bits() incorrectly adds va_align.bits to hugetlbfs mappings, producing addresses that fail the boundary BUG_ON check in __unmap_hugepage_range() during teardown. Triggering requires huge-page access on AMD Family 15h hardware and a nonzero per-boot alignment offset; the failure also leaks huge-page reservations until reboot.
