CVE-2026-98697

Memory leak via dynamic-ID deregistration race

Published Oct 18, 2026 · Updated Oct 18, 2026

A race in Linux USB serial driver teardown allows local users to leak memory via concurrent dynamic-ID writes and deregistration. In drivers/usb/serial/bus.c, usb_serial_bus_deregister() frees dynamic IDs before unregistering the driver, leaving new_id writable long enough for another ID allocation to escape cleanup. Triggering requires write access to that attribute during driver deregistration; the documented consequence is unreclaimed allocations, not disclosure of memory contents.
