CVE-2026-98685

File corruption via incomplete clone-range cache invalidation

Published Oct 18, 2026 · Updated Oct 18, 2026

Data corruption in the Linux SMB client allows local users to expose cached bytes when a clone operation extends a file. The cifs_remap_file_range() function invalidates only the destination region, leaving the cache folio crossing the old end of file intact and making bytes dirtied past EOF through mmap visible after extension. Triggering requires access to a mounted SMB file for memory-mapped writes and a size-extending clone; the documented consequence is incorrect file content, not arbitrary kernel-memory disclosure.
