CVE-2026-98683

Data corruption via unflushed zero-range writes

Published Oct 18, 2026 · Updated Oct 18, 2026

Data corruption in the Linux SMB client allows local users to restore stale file contents through an interior zero-range operation. In smb3_zero_range(), dirty pages are not flushed before cache invalidation and FSCTL_SET_ZERO_DATA when the range ends before EOF, allowing later writeback to replace zeros with old contents. Triggering requires a writable SMB-backed file and overlapping dirty cached data; the documented consequence is incorrect file contents, not code execution.
