Kernel crash via skipped network-device unregistration
Published Oct 18, 2026 · Updated Oct 18, 2026
Linux's mtk_eth_soc driver allows attackers to trigger a kernel crash through incorrect cleanup after device-probe failure. When register_netdev() fails in mtk_probe(), cleanup skips mtk_unreg_dev() and frees previously registered devices, triggering a BUG_ON assertion. The condition requires the affected MediaTek Ethernet driver and a registration failure after an earlier device registered; an attacker-controlled trigger and required privileges are not disclosed.
