CVE-2026-98598

Network-device unregistration hang via IPv6 route race

Published Oct 18, 2026 · Updated Oct 18, 2026

Linux kernel IPv6 routing contains a race that allows attackers to hang network-device unregistration during route removal. rt6_insert_exception() accepts a new exception for a fib6_info being removed by fib6_purge_rt(), creating a reference cycle that retains the route, nexthop device, and per-CPU routes. Triggering requires exception insertion to overlap route removal; attacker privileges and a remote trigger are not documented.
