Kernel memory corruption via unchecked sense descriptors
Published Oct 18, 2026 · Updated Oct 18, 2026
Out-of-bounds access in Linux libata allows attackers to corrupt kernel memory through crafted ATAPI device responses. The ata_scsi_set_passthru_sense_fields() function trusts the REQUEST SENSE additional-length byte when locating or appending an ATA Status Return descriptor, allowing reads and writes beyond a 96-byte buffer. Triggering requires a failed ATA PASS-THROUGH command and a malicious device response; the published reproduction demonstrates memory-safety violations, not code execution.
