Resource retention via unreleased reverse-entry reference
Published Oct 18, 2026 · Updated Oct 18, 2026
Reference leakage in Linux mlx5 connection tracking allows attackers to retain reverse entries via failed shared-counter lookup. The mlx5_tc_ct_shared_counter_get() function fails to release the reference acquired by mlx5_tc_ct_entry_get() when refcount_inc_not_zero() fails before counter creation. Reachability requires the mlx5 connection-tracking counter path and a reverse entry whose counter cannot be acquired; the published evidence establishes persistent entry retention, not a demonstrated crash or privilege gain.
