Handle leakage via failed compound directory opens
Published Oct 18, 2026 · Updated Oct 18, 2026
Resource leakage in the Linux SMB client allows remote attackers to leave server-side directory handles open via compound-response errors. In open_cached_dir(), an error after a successful CREATE discards the file identifiers needed for SMB2_close(), while CREATE responses are used without adequate validation. Exposure requires an established SMB share connection and a cached directory open; the documented consequence is leaked handles, not demonstrated code execution or a system crash.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
