Kernel soft lockup via unbounded packet dropping
Published Oct 14, 2026 · Updated Oct 14, 2026
Denial of service in Linux CoDel queue handling allows local users to cause a kernel soft lockup via packet traffic. In codel_dequeue(), a small interval rounds the next-drop increment to zero, and the unbounded dropping loop drains the backlog while holding the queue lock. Triggering requires traffic through a suitably configured queue; the documented result is a soft lockup, not code execution.
