Kernel warning via unchecked wireless interface state
Published Oct 14, 2026 · Updated Oct 14, 2026
State validation failure in Linux mac80211 allows local users to trigger a kernel warning through a wireless bitrate-setting ioctl. The ieee80211_set_bitrate_mask() function checks whether an interface is running but calls the driver without checking IEEE80211_SDATA_IN_DRIVER. The path requires a running interface absent from its driver during bringup or teardown; the published finding establishes a warning, not a crash.
