Kernel panic via incorrect XDP device matching
Published Oct 9, 2026 · Updated Oct 9, 2026
Device-matching errors in Linux 6.3 BPF allow local users to crash the kernel via cross-device attachment of bound XDP programs. The __bpf_offload_dev_match() function accepts mismatched devices when their offdev pointers compare equal, allowing driver-specific metadata functions to interpret another driver's xdp_buff incorrectly. Exploitation requires CAP_BPF and CAP_NET_ADMIN; attaching a veth-bound program to tun causes an out-of-bounds read and kernel panic.
