Kernel-memory disclosure via unchecked VLAN header insertion
Published Oct 9, 2026 · Updated Oct 9, 2026
Information disclosure in Linux VLAN insertion allows local users to read kernel memory via repeated VLAN pushes on short TUN frames. The __vlan_insert_inner_tag() helper reserves headroom without checking that the MAC header exists, copying uninitialized slab bytes beyond the packet tail into transmitted data. The demonstrated path requires CAP_NET_RAW, a TUN device, and repeated configured VLAN pushes; the disclosed bytes include kernel-address fragments, not demonstrated code execution.
