Wi-Fi scan interruption via probe-element length undercount
Published Oct 6, 2026 · Updated Oct 6, 2026
Incorrect probe-request sizing in Linux kernel mac80211 allows local users with scan access to interrupt Wi-Fi scans on 6 GHz-capable hardware. The scan_ies_len calculation omits the HE 6 GHz Band Capability element even though probe requests include it on every band when 6 GHz is supported. Building the request elements can then fail and trigger a warning in __ieee80211_start_scan(); the public report does not establish a system crash or remote trigger.
