Local kernel crash via premature operstate transfer
Published Oct 6, 2026 · Updated Oct 6, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux virt_wifi driver allows local users to crash the kernel by creating a virtual Wi-Fi link over a dormant device. virt_wifi_newlink transfers operstate before registering the new device, leaving it on lweventlist when failed registration frees it; linkwatch_fire_event later accesses the freed entry. The trigger requires access to user and network namespaces, a dormant lower device, and a failed link registration.
