Silent file corruption via stale 9p size metadata
Published Oct 6, 2026 · Updated Oct 6, 2026
File corruption in the Linux 9p client allows local users to replace server data with NULs through writes to a cached 9p mount. After p9_client_write extends a server file, v9fs_issue_write() fails to advance i_size and remote_i_size, leaving netfs to zero-fill ranges that contain valid data. Exposure requires a writable 9p mount using mmap, loose, or fscache writeback caching; reads can return silent NULs, and partial writes can overwrite the server copy.
