Kernel use-after-free via unlocked codec-list cleanup
Published Oct 6, 2026 · Updated Oct 6, 2026
Use-after-free in Linux kernel Bluetooth codec handling allows local users to read a freed codec entry during a BT_CODEC query. The hci_dev_close_sync() path clears hdev->local_codecs without holding hdev->lock, so sco_sock_getsockopt() can read an entry after cleanup frees it. The race requires controller closure to overlap a local codec query; a KASAN use-after-free read is documented, but further impact is not established.
