Mapping denial via leaked memory commit charges
Published Oct 6, 2026 · Updated Oct 6, 2026
Memory-accounting error in the Linux kernel starting with 6.16 allows local users to exhaust commit accounting through failed file mappings. __mmap_region() sends a failed call_mmap_prepare() to abort_munmap instead of unacct_error, leaving the charge made by __mmap_setup() in place. The effect requires a file's mmap_prepare callback to reject a chargeable mapping; repeated failures can deny later memory mappings when commit limits are enforced.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
