Kernel panic via short TKIP MIC underflow
Published Oct 6, 2026 · Updated Oct 6, 2026
An out-of-bounds read in Linux libipw TKIP verification allows context-dependent attackers to crash or stall a kernel via short wireless frames. The libipw_michael_mic_verify() function subtracts an absent eight-byte Michael MIC from an unsigned frame length, causing michael_mic() to read beyond the packet buffer. Exploitation requires an affected ipw2100 or ipw2200 device using host TKIP verification, an active TKIP key, and a sender able to supply a non-replayed frame with a valid encrypted integrity check.
