Out-of-bounds read via compound SMB length confusion
Published Oct 6, 2026 · Updated Oct 6, 2026
Out-of-bounds read in the Linux SMB client allows remote attackers controlling an SMB server to trigger a kernel read via encrypted responses. In receive_encrypted_standard(), server->total_read retains the full decrypted frame size, so smb2_check_message() validates a truncated non-last sub-PDU against the compound frame and smb2_get_data_area_len() reads past its bounds. The client must process a compound encrypted response from a connected SMB server; the published record does not establish data disclosure or code execution.
