Extended-attribute hiding via failed setxattr state update
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Linux 7.1 contains an NTFS extended-attribute state error that allows local users to hide existing attributes until inode eviction. In fs/ntfs/ea.c, ntfs_set_ea() unconditionally derives the HasEA flag from stale ea_info_qsize after a failed setxattr, clearing the in-memory flag while attributes remain on disk. A local user needs permission to set an attribute on an NTFS inode; the resulting attribute invisibility lasts until that inode is evicted.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
