File-size limit bypass via unchecked zero range
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Improper size validation in the Linux SMB client allows local users to grow files on CIFS mounts beyond the caller's file-size limit. The smb3_zero_range() path sends an extending FALLOC_FL_ZERO_RANGE request without first calling inode_newsize_ok() to enforce RLIMIT_FSIZE. A local process needs write access to a CIFS-mounted file and must omit FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE; successful use expands that file beyond its configured limit.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
