CVE-2026-98125

Stale CIFS reads via incomplete page-cache invalidation

Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026

Stale page-cache handling in Linux 5.19.12 and 6.0 allows local users to read outdated CIFS file data after range changes. The smb3_insert_range() and smb3_collapse_range() paths partially zero non-page-aligned boundary pages with truncate_pagecache_range() but leave them marked uptodate after COPYCHUNK moves server data. The issue requires a CIFS mount, a primed client cache, and a successful insert- or collapse-range operation; affected reads can return stale content.
