Service hang via incomplete zone-failure cleanup
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Denial of service in Linux 5.19 allows attackers to hang zoned btrfs allocation via unspecified vectors after zone finishing fails. In do_zone_finish(), the failure path returns after clearing BLOCK_GROUP_FLAG_ZONE_IS_ACTIVE but before removing the block group from zone_active_bgs, releasing its reference, or waking BTRFS_FS_NEED_ZONE_FINISH waiters. The condition requires a zoned btrfs filesystem and a failing call_zone_finish(); subsequent allocation repeatedly selects the inactive, full block group and spins while waiters remain blocked.
