Kernel crash via unresolved BPF callback address
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Improper BPF program verification in Linux allows local users to crash the kernel through a crafted timer callback. For a single-subprogram program, jit_subprogs() does not replace a BPF_PSEUDO_FUNC reference to main with a real address. Loading the trigger requires BPF privileges and BTF_FUNC_STATIC metadata; passing the unresolved value to bpf_timer_set_callback() calls a bogus address.
