Local service interruption via undersized SFQ quantum

Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026

Denial of service in Linux SFQ scheduling allows local users with CAP_NET_ADMIN to cause a soft lockup through a crafted qdisc. sfq_change() accepts quantum=1 with a crafted size table, causing sfq_dequeue() to refill an inflated deficit one byte per loop while holding the qdisc lock. Reachability requires CONFIG_NET_SCH_SFQ and CAP_NET_ADMIN, including capability confined to a user namespace; the soft lockup interrupts service without reported data corruption.
