Kernel crash via raced IPv6 route deletion
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Race condition in Linux 6.16 allows local users to crash the kernel by racing IPv6 ECMP route replacement against route deletion. In __ip6_del_rt_siblings(), concurrent route replacement can clear rt->fib6_node after lookup, but the deletion path dereferences fn->leaf without first checking whether the node is null. Triggering the flaw requires local route-management access, and the demonstrated consequence is a kernel crash rather than data access or code execution.
