Kernel crash via malformed histogram stacktrace key
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Out-of-bounds memory access in Linux trace histograms allows local users to crash the kernel through a malformed stacktrace key. parse_field() accepts the .stacktrace modifier for a non-stacktrace field, causing event_hist_trigger() to trust record data as a count and copy unbounded longs into a 31-entry array. Writing the crafted trigger requires privileged tracefs access; successful execution corrupts kernel memory and can panic the host.
