Kernel panic via misparsed STACKTRACE histogram key
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Memory corruption in Linux 6.4 allows local users to panic the kernel through a crafted STACKTRACE histogram trigger. parse_field() returns the zero-sized generic pseudo-field instead of NULL, so create_hist_field() treats common_type as __data_loc data and uses a record-derived value as an unbounded memcpy length. Triggering the fault requires root-writable tracefs controls; a successful trigger causes a general-protection fault and kernel panic, interrupting the host.
