System crash via unserialized broadcast-device replacement
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Race condition in the Linux kernel tick broadcast subsystem allows attackers to crash an affected system via unspecified vectors. tick_install_broadcast_device replaces and detaches the current clockevent device without serializing the exchange against a concurrent broadcast operation, which can then arm the detached device. The kernel BUG occurs when the former device has restricted interrupt affinity and the last CPU in that mask goes offline.
