Local system hang via deferred write accounting
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Deadlock in Linux kernel io_uring write handling allows local users to hang the system through concurrent asynchronous I/O and filesystem freezing. The io_complete_rw path defers releasing SB_FREEZE_WRITE protection to io_req_rw_complete task work, while freeze_super blocks that task and queues its next writer acquisition behind the freeze. An unprivileged local user must race an io_uring write completed by an I/O worker with filesystem shutdown or freezing; the resulting circular wait leaves affected tasks stuck in uninterruptible sleep.
