Incorrect write result via uninitialized return value
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Incorrect error propagation in Linux 7.0 allows local users to receive unrelated results from synchronous CIFS writes. In netfs_unbuffered_write(), preparation failure or an empty iterator exits the first subrequest loop before ret is initialized, so netfs_unbuffered_write_iter_locked() returns that stray value instead of wreq->error. The condition also affects Linux 6.18.17 through 6.18.52 and 6.19 releases from 6.19.7 before 6.20, and requires cifs_prepare_write() to fail while reopening the file or obtaining credits.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
