Kernel crash via spoofed 6LoWPAN lower device
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in affected Linux kernels allows local users to crash the kernel through a crafted RTM_NEWLINK request. lowpan_newlink() accepts a TUN device whose link-layer type was changed to ARPHRD_IEEE802154, then dereferences its uninitialized ieee802154_ptr when creating a 6LoWPAN link. The trigger requires CAP_NET_ADMIN, including within a user and network namespace, and produces a kernel panic followed by a delayed reboot.
