CVE-2026-97578

Kernel memory overwrite via oversized AV1 tile grid

Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026

Out-of-bounds write in the Linux kernel 6.5 VPU981 AV1 decoder allows local users to overrun a DMA tile buffer via a crafted bitstream. The rockchip_vpu981_av1_dec_set_tile_info() function divides context_update_tile_id by an untrusted tile_cols value and writes one descriptor per claimed tile without respecting the AV1_MAX_TILES buffer capacity. Exploitation requires access to the VPU981 AV1 decode path on Rockchip hardware; the published material does not establish whether the fault causes a kernel crash or adjacent-memory corruption.
