Kernel over-read via mismatched copy length
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
An out-of-bounds read in the Linux SMB client allows remote attackers controlling an SMB share to over-read a kernel buffer by one byte. In smb2_parse_native_symlink(), memcpy skips the leading separator with smb_target+1 but still copies smb_target_len bytes, so the source range extends one byte beyond the allocation. The path requires a client to access a share-root-relative native symlink supplied by the SMB server; the demonstrated result is a KASAN slab-out-of-bounds report.
