Filesystem shutdown via uninitialized XFS error return
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Improper initialization in affected Linux kernels allows local users to shut down an XFS filesystem during online repair. The xfs_defer_finish_one function returns an uninitialized error value when an item-less deferred-work list skips its loop, and xfs_defer_finish_noroll treats a nonzero value as fatal in-core corruption. Reaching the flaw requires privileged XFS online repair on a kernel built with CONFIG_XFS_ONLINE_REPAIR; the bounded consequence is shutdown of the affected filesystem.
