CVE-2026-97439Hinoki check available

Kernel crash via inconsistent ntfs3 compression state

Published Sep 24, 2026 · Updated Sep 24, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in affected Linux kernels allows local users to crash the kernel through writes to an ntfs3 file. The system.dos_attrib handler replaces all of ni->std_fa with one byte, clearing compression while leaving ATTR_DATA and mapping operations compressed, so generic_perform_write calls a NULL write_begin callback. Reaching the crash requires a writable ntfs3 mount and control of a file's system.ntfs_attrib and system.dos_attrib values.
