Stored XSS via unguarded repository media response

Published Oct 6, 2026 · Updated Oct 6, 2026

Stored XSS in the Gitea repository media API in 28.0.0 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to run JavaScript in a viewer's session. The media endpoint sends small Git-stored files without the content-type and disposition headers used for user content, allowing committed HTML to render on the Gitea origin. Exploitation requires repository push access and a victim who opens the media URL; the script acts with that victim's permissions.
