Out-of-window command execution via inherited timezone control
Published Sep 23, 2026 · Updated Sep 23, 2026
Time-based authorization bypass in Sudo in Red Hat Hardened Images allows local users to execute commands outside configured access windows. For NOTBEFORE or NOTAFTER timestamps without a trailing Z, Sudo evaluates local time using the caller-controlled TZ environment variable, allowing extreme offsets to shift the authorization window by about 25 hours. A local account and a matching time-restricted sudoers rule are required; authentication still applies, but commands remain usable after expiration or before activation.
