Startup delays via repeated opaque-whiteout directory walks
Published Oct 12, 2026 · Updated Oct 12, 2026
CPU exhaustion in containerd's layer unpack handler allows attackers to delay container startup via crafted image layers. The applyNaive function in pkg/archive/tar.go repeatedly walks a growing directory when layer entries interleave files with opaque whiteouts, without remembering directories already processed. Exploitation requires pulling or importing the crafted image through this handler; prolonged unpacking also occupies image-pull concurrency slots and delays unrelated deployments, without an established crash or reboot.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
