Command execution via source filename macro expansion
Published Sep 24, 2026 · Updated Sep 24, 2026
Command injection in rpm allows local users to execute shell commands by processing a crafted source RPM as the invoking user. During source-file relocation, rpm expands %() constructs embedded in source or spec basenames and passes the resulting text to popen(). Exploitation requires an untrusted .src.rpm to be installed, rebuilt, or otherwise processed; commands run with the invoking user's privileges.
