Heap corruption via overflowing symlink size allocation
Published Sep 29, 2026 · Updated Sep 29, 2026
Heap-based buffer overflow in RPM on affected Red Hat products lets context-dependent attackers corrupt memory via a crafted RPM package. In iterReadArchiveNext(), an all-ones RPMTAG_LONGFILESIZES value for a symlink overflows allocation arithmetic to one byte, while an independently controlled cpio size drives a write beyond that allocation. The path is reached when a user processes the package with rpm2cpio, rpm2archive, or rpm -qlvp; the supplied record establishes memory corruption, not code execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
