Root code execution via unrestricted serial device path
Published Sep 22, 2026 · Updated Sep 22, 2026
Privilege escalation in CUPS with the cups-filters serial backend allows local users in lpadmin to execute code as root. The scheduler accepts an unrestricted path from a non-file device URI and passes controlled print data to the root-running serial backend, producing an arbitrary file write. Exploitation requires local lpadmin membership and a serial backend installed with root-only permissions; the write can alter security-sensitive CUPS configuration.
