Process termination via unbounded file-scoped phasor allocation
Published Sep 29, 2026 · Updated Sep 29, 2026
Memory exhaustion in Wireshark 4.4.0 through 4.4.18 and 4.6.0 through 4.6.8 allows attackers to terminate packet analysis via crafted CFG3 frames. The IEEE C37.118 config_3_frame_fast() parser trusts the packet's num_ph count and retains a large allocation for each frame until the capture closes. Exploitation requires capture of attacker-supplied traffic or opening a crafted trace; repeated frames can exhaust memory and terminate Wireshark or TShark.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
